Stages
How an IVF program works
A step-by-step plan from the first visit to the result
Examination
The doctor reviews both partners' test results, orders any missing tests and explains the diagnosis.
1–2 weeksStimulation
Hormone medication helps the eggs mature. The doctor monitors their growth on ultrasound.
10–12 daysEgg retrieval
The doctor retrieves the eggs with a needle under ultrasound guidance. The same day, your partner provides a sperm sample.

The embryologist combines the eggs and sperm or, with ICSI, injects a selected sperm directly into the egg.
on retrieval dayEmbryo development
The embryos grow in an incubator; the embryologist assesses their development and selects the best one for transfer.
3–5 daysEmbryo transfer
The doctor places the embryo in the uterus through a thin catheter. The remaining embryos are frozen.

An hCG blood test shows whether you are pregnant. If you are, an ultrasound confirms it later.
